Description
This presentation will present information on teasing and bullying in preschool and the primary grades. The presenters will define teasing and then discuss the the role of child development in understanding teasing. The presenters will state the reasons children tease and then discuss ways children and teachers can discourage teasing. The presenters will give many different actions children can take to help deal with teasing. There will be short-term and long-term strategies presented. Teasing is often said to be a prelude to bullying behavior by children. The balance of the session will be to define bullying behavior, discuss characteristics of the bully, and to recognize that bullying is a major problem in this country and it often begins in preschool and the primary grades. The presenters will give national figures about bullying that takes place, particularly in the schools. The presenters will also discuss how parents or siblings can help or hinder the bullying behavior. The workshop will also present information about the victim and the onlooker of the bullying behavior. Common characteristics of the victim will be presented as well as discussion about children of different ethnic backgrounds and children with special needs.The workshop will conclude with discussions about how teachers can intervene when bullying takes place and how to deal with the victims, but also the bully and how to change his/her behavior. There will also be suggestions of what parents can do at home and also help the student/child at school. Anti-bullying programs will be discussed.
