Description
Children are natural mathematicians --- curious, open, and adventurous, they are intuitive problem solvers. We know that mathematics occurs not only throughout our daily routine, but even after everyone goes home. When the National Research Council's report, Mathematics Learning in Early Childhood: Paths Toward Excellence and Equity was published in 2009, it made it very clear that, "All children must have sustained and frequent times in which they enact the core mathematical content and talk about what they are doing and why they are doing it" (p. 125). Participants in this session will identify and understand the meaning of the nine different elements that make up early mathematics. The fact that math plays such a critical role in children's future learning means that it is essential that we ensure that teachers receive as much support as possible. Participants will learn strategies for being more intentional about planning for learning experiences in which the diverse aspects of mathematics are the primary focus. They will also have an opportunity to generate activities that not only provide strategies for how children at different developmental levels might interact with the materials, but also provide the teachers with suggestions for scaffolding the children's learning at each of these levels. These strategies will also provide teachers with the reassurance and confidence to share with children the fun and discoveries to be had as they travel down the "math path" together
