Description
This presentation will present a framework for teachers to use as they plan, implement, and document anti-bias curriculum for young children. The framework will help teachers identify entry points for the curricula, respond to children's comments and questions, identify and consider their own feelings and emotions, develop curriculum that is responsive and relevant, and document and share the learning that occurs. A case study will describe how antibias education is practiced at the Eliot-Pearson Children's School, a lab school affiliated with the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development at Tufts University in Medford, MA. Concrete examples will be provided of how teachers implemented curriculum in different areas: racial identity, family diversity, class and privilege, ability differences, and home language and culture using this framework. Documentation and dissemination possibilities will be discussed including a community forum on these different issues, and an antibias gallery exhibit. Strategies to overcome challenges and obstacles to this work will be discussed. Presentation will be interactive, allowing time for small and large groups and application of ideas to your own setting.
