Description
Recent research on the way boys and girls play, the struggle for power, effects of society on children's gender play behaviors, will be summarized. Then, teachers will explore what they can do in their classrooms to support gender equity. Questions such as these will be discussed: 1. How does your general classroom environment support or hinder gender equity? 2. How does your use of language support or hinder gender equity? 3. With whom and how do children play in your classroom? (Using a checklist that will be supplied by the presenter, when you get back to your classroom, keep track of where children play and with whom in the various areas of the classroom in order to better understand gender-based play in your setting.) 4. How can you change your classroom to promote gender equity? (After a brief Powerpoint presentation on this topic, participants will work in small groups to consider the types of things they can do in various interest areas, with children's picture books, with respect to outdoor play, etc. to support gender equity. Each group will be given a specific task. The groups will share their ideas at the end of the session.
