Are student expectations of employers becoming unreasonable? Or have employers and colleges really missed the boat on building relationships that are being defined by students who were born after 1991? With a persistent and heightened employer use of social media and online networking, this session addresses how employers “measure up” during face-to-face interactions through informal or formal recruiting methods. Through student focus group data and enhanced relationships with student leaders, University of California-San Diego's career services staff found prevalent, yet innocent mistakes employers often make when interacting with students who are oversaturated in an online environment. Examine, discuss, and learn from student data on successful and non-successful strategies in employer relationship building. Participants will gain perspective related to this critical issue, explore strategies on addressing student perceptions, and take part in a larger group dialogue to address interpersonal communication as it relates to student learning through the recruitment process.
