Description
"It is estimated that one-quarter to one-half of all college attendees are first generation students. These students are more likely to have difficulty attaining degrees, be disengaged from the college experience, and experience unique psychological difficulties. These students also have unique strengths such as being very goal focused, having strong time management skills, and being able to advocate for themselves. While numerous studies have been conducted on academic persistence of this population, very little attention has been given to their career development. This session will discuss the results of a qualitative study focused on the career development of first generation college students. While the focus of this study was comprehensive, this presentation will concentrate specifically on the results related to this populations' career development in terms of their time in college. The presenters will discuss topics such as these students' perception of their career development, the strengths and challenges they bring to this process, and the types of programming that has been or may be helpful for them. Implications from these research findings for college career professionals will be highlighted in order to provide concrete applications and knowledge for attendees.
