Darryl Rich, PharmD, MBA, Medication Safety Specialist, Institute for Safe Medication Practices
Darryl Rich is currently a Medication Safety Specialist for the Institute for Safe Medication Practices since July 1, 2012. In this role, he works with health care organizations to identify unsafe medication practices and improve medication safety, while promoting and advocating ISMPs mission and vision to its stakeholders through networking, education and consultation.
Previously, Darryl Rich was a surveyor for The Joint Commission in the hospital, home care, and ambulatory accreditation programs, also working for the Joint Commissions Standards Interpretation Group as an internal resource related to pharmacy and medication management. Prior to being a surveyor, he served at the Joint Commission headquarters as an Associate Director for Surveyor Management and Development. Dr. Rich had been with The Joint Commission almost 20 years. Prior to coming to The Joint Commission, Dr. Rich was National Director of Pharmacy Services for Critical Care America, Inc., a national home infusion company. Prior to that, he served as Director of Pharmacy Services at Boston University Medical Center and Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at Northeastern University.
Dr. Rich received his B.S. degree from the University of California at Davis, his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of California at San Francisco and a Masters in Business Administration in Health Care Management from Bryant University in Rhode Island.
Dr. Rich is active member and Fellow in the American Society of Health System Pharmacists and a past President of the New England Council of Health-System Pharmacists. He has received numerous awards, including a Certificate of Appreciation from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) in 2004, and both a Cheers Award in 2000 and a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) for his ongoing contributions to patient safety and having had a major impact on safe medication practices while working at the Joint Commission.
Currently, Dr. Rich has given over 640 invited professional presentations and has authored 76 publications in refereed journals, including eight books and four video series.
