Dr. Mahan received his bachelor and doctor of pharmacy from UNM in 1996 and 2004, respectively. He completed 4 months of specialized antithrombotic and venous thromboembolism (VTE) training under Alex Spyropoulos, MD at the Lovelace Clinical Thrombosis Center in 2003 and in 2010-2011 completed a traveling fellowship sponsored by North American Thrombosis Forum under Drs. Graham Turpie and Spyropoulos at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada.
As a director of pharmacy within Lovelace Health Systems, he spearheaded a pilot project with the National Quality Forum (NQF) in 2006/7 for VTE Quality Measure development as one of fifty-five US hospitals. The published results of this pharmacy-driven program realized a significant doubling in appropriate type, dose and duration of thromboprophylaxis with a 74% significant reduction in preventable VTE.
Dr. Mahan has delivered over 100 lectures to physicians and healthcare professionals internationally on antithrombotics. As Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at UNM and a pharmacist clinician with prescriptive authority in New Mexico, Dr. Mahans primary research interest is to reduce the incidence of preventable VTE and stroke. He has recently published four book chapters and ten peer-reviewed journal articles on topics including US VTE cost estimates, peri-operative antithrombotic bridging, preventable VTE as an adverse event, and the global impact of novel antithrombotics. He is currently involved as Principal or Co-Investigator on several VTE and cardiology studies. Dr. Mahan is currently working as director of outcomes research at the New Mexico Heart Institute, the largest cardiology practice in the state.
