Sarah Melton, PharmD, BCPP, Clinical Pharmacist, Gatton College of Pharmacy, East Tennessee State University
Sarah T. Melton is Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University. She is the Clinical Pharmacist at Highpower, PC in Lebanon, Virginia and the Clinical Geriatric Pharmacist at All Care for Seniors, a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly in Cedar Bluff, VA. Dr. Melton received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (1991) and Doctor of Pharmacy (1994) degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy (VCU). She completed a Fellowship in Psychiatric Pharmacy at VCU in 1996. She has been a board certified psychiatric pharmacist (Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties) since 1997 and a board certified ambulatory care pharmacist since 2011. She has been a Certified Geriatric Pharmacist since 2005 and is a Fellow of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists. She performs Medication Management in the areas of psychiatric and neurologic pharmacy, addiction, and other primary care disorders. She works directly with patients and an interdisciplinary team in the area of substance abuse at Highpower, PC.
Susan Sonne, PharmD, BCPP, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Medical University of South Carolina
Dr. Susan Sonne is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Clinical Neuroscience Division, at the Medical University of South Carolina. She received her BS in Pharmacy at the Medical College of Virginia, and her PharmD at the Medical University of South Carolina, where she subsequently completed a residency in psychopharmacology and three years fellowship training in substance abuse research. She is board certified in psychiatric pharmacy practice and has been active in teaching and research for the last eighteen years. Dr. Sonne has worked primarily in the treatment of addictions and co-occurring disorders, particularly in the area of bipolar disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder.

Description
This case-based session will prepare pharmacists to provide valuable guidance in developing care plans for opiate dependence in pregnancy.
Contrast the benefits and disadvantages associated with use of buprenorphine or methadone in pregnant women.
Discuss the management of intrapartum and postpartum pain in opioid dependent patients.
Evaluate evidence-based literature regarding treatment of opioid dependency during pregnancy with buprenorphine or methadone.
Examine the incidence and treatment of neonatal abstinence syndrome associated with buprenorphine and methadone use in pregnancy.
