Dr. Cohen is Professor, Department of Pharmacotherapy at Washington State University College of Pharmacy
and previously also served as Department Chairman. He is also serves as Professor for WIMHRT
(Washington Institute for Mental Health Research and Training) and previously served as Assistant Director for
Psychopharmacology Research and Training. He also works with graduate students and faculty and is
Professor of Health Policy and Administration for WSUSpokane. Dr. Cohen is a Board Certified Psychiatric
Pharmacist has served as a member of the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties Psychiatric Pharmacy
Specialty Council. He served as a member of the United States Pharmacopeia Psychiatry Expert Committee
from 2005-1010 where we participated in development the Model Guidelines for CMS.
Previously, Dr. Cohen was Professor of Psychiatry, Medicine and Clinical Pharmacy at the University of
Cincinnati Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy. Dr. Cohen has also served as Director of the Office of Clinical
Trials for the University of Cincinnati. Prior to his appointment at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Cohen was
Global Director of Central Nervous System Research for Kendle International Inc, one of the largest global
clinical research organizations. Prior to moving to Cincinnati, Dr. Cohen was Professor of Pharmacy,
Psychiatry + Behavioral Sciences at the University of Oklahoma Colleges of Pharmacy and Medicine, and
Director of Clinical Pharmacology Services for the Developmental Disabilities Services Division of the
Oklahoma Department of Human Services, where he and his service he provided patient clinical consultations
on a statewide basis, educational programs for professional staff and the public and technical assistance to the
Departmental regarding policy and program development. Dr. Cohen also served as the Director of
Pharmaceutical Services for the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services and
was responsible for pharmacy services for all State Hospitals and Community Mental Health Centers
Pharmacy Services throughout the state and chaired the Departments Statewide Pharmacy & Therapeutics
Committee. Dr. Cohen has also held academic appointments at the University of California, San Francisco
School of Pharmacy and University of Maryland School of Pharmacy.
Dr. Cohen has been elected Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the American Society of
Health-System Pharmacists. Dr. Cohen is a Founding Director of the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic
Pharmacists. Dr. Cohen is a member of many professional organizations including the American College of
Clinical Pharmacy, where he founded and served as Chairman of the Central Nervous System Practice and
Research Network and was elected to the Board of Regents and most recently serves as President-Elect. He
also served the membership of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, as Chairman of the
Psychopharmacy Specialty Practice Group and various committees and task forces. In March 2010, Dr. Cohen
was inducted as a Distinguished Practitioner of the National Academies of Practice (Pharmacy Academy). In
2012, Dr. Cohen was elected Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology.
Dr. Cohen's scholarly interests include pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of psychotropic medications,
geriatric psychopharmacology, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, and emergency preparedness
(specifically, access to healthcare during times of crisis). He has served as consultant for numerous
pharmaceutical companies and national managed-care organizations. He has served on the Editorial Boards of
Innovations in Clinical Neuroscience, Psychiatry 2010, the Primary Care Companion of the Journal of Clinical
Psychiatry, Drug Benefit Trends, the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, CNS News and
Pharmacy Practice News, and as a reviewer for journals such as Journal of Clinical Psychiatry,
Pharmacotherapy, Annals of Pharmacotherapy, American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, American
Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental, Clinical
Therapeutics, Current Psychiatry, Pharmacoeconomics, and American Pharmacy. He also has fulfilled an
extensive invited lecture schedule and has both authored and co-authored numerous articles in professional
journals.
After earning his Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy, he
completed his postdoctoral residency in psychiatric pharmacy at the LA County/USC Medical Center.
Throughout his professional career, Dr. Cohen has been recognized for his clinical skills, management abilities
and professional activities.
Effective June 1, 2012 Dr. Cohen is Professor, Associate Dean for Clinical Programs and Interim Chair, Department of Pharmacotherapy at the University of North Texas System College of Pharmacy.
