Christopher Herndon,

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
Chris Herndon, PharmD, BCPS, CPE, FASHP is an Associate Professor with the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) School of Pharmacy and Clinical Specialist with the St. Louis University School of Medicine Department of Community and Family Medicine Residency Training Program. In his current role, Dr. Herndon sees chronic pain patients in a multidisciplinary setting within a large family medicine residency clinic where he trains Resident Family Physicians on appropriate opioid prescribing, monitoring, and assessment. Dr. Herndons scholarship interest focuses primarily on pain and palliative care education for pharmacists and is the Co-PI for the NIH Center of Excellence in Pain Education at SIUE.
Dr. Herndon is active in professional service and serves on the professional advisory board for Hospice of Southern Illinois and serves on the Section Advisory Group on Pain and Palliative Care for the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Dr. Herndon has also served as a member of the organizing committee for the Pharmacotherapy Special Interest Group for the American Pain Society, Founding Chair for the Missouri Pain Initiative and the Board of Directors for the Alliance of State Pain Initiates. He serves on numerous editorial boards and as a peer reviewer for many of the pain and palliative care focused professional journals.

Mary Lynn McPherson,

University of Maryland School of Pharmacy
Mary Lynn McPherson, Pharm.D., BCPS,CPE, is Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in Baltimore. She has maintained a practice in both hospice and palliative care, and ambulatory care her entire career. At present, Dr. McPherson is the Director of Pharmacotherapy Services at UniversityCare Heritage Crossing in Baltimore. Dr. McPherson teaches extensively in the Pharm.D. curriculum on pain management and end of life care, including didactic and experiential content. She also developed one of the first and few palliative care pharmacy residencies in the U.S.
Dr. McPherson serves on the Board of the Hospice Network of Maryland and is also President of the American Society of Pain Educators. McPherson is a Fellow in the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists, the American Pharmacists Association, and the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists. She has received many honors for her work, including the American Pharmacists Association Distinguished Achievement Award in Specialized Practice, the Maryland Pharmacists Association Innovative Practice Award, and the Maryland Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists W. Purdum Lifetime Achievement Award. She has written four books, and many book chapters and peer-reviewed articles on pain management, palliative care, and other topics.

Jennifer Strickland,
PharmD, Pain and Palliative Care Specialist / Research Scientist and Clinical Research Educator,

Jennifer Strickland received her PharmD from the University of Florida and subsequently completed a residency in pain management at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa Florida. She has extensive experience in both acute and chronic pain management and management of patients with co-morbid psychiatric and substance abuse disorders.
Currently, she co-manages a pain and palliative care elective and is an adjunct professor at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. She also is a clincal research educator with Millennium Research Institute and Millennium Laboratories. Dr. Strickland is published in the areas of pain management and palliative care and has spoken regionally and nationally on numerous related topics, including opioid pharmacology, risk management in chronic pain patients, and adjuvant pharmacotherapy for chronic pain.

Opioids Do NOT Increase Mortality in Cancer, Mary Lynn McPherson, PharmD, BCPS, FASHP
- Evaluate the data and develop personal opinions on the reported risk of opioids causing increased morbidity in cancer patients using analgesics.
- Following presentation of available evidence, develop a position on the possibility that opioids cause cancer to grow and further metastasize.
