Description
This presentation will outline the effects of Hurricane Sandy on Beth Israel Hospital, the only hospital still open south of 57th street in Manhattan in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Although the hospital’s infrastructure meets all of the required codes, several of its functions were adversely impacted by the extended power outage. As all of the nearby hospitals closed, Beth Israel stepped in to provide emergency and critical services for the residents of a large portion of the New York City. Overall, the hospital had adequate power generation, but that power was not distributed to several areas not included in the original plan for operations in an extended outage. This session will enable attendees to:
• Evaluate your facility’s emergency power use.
• Plan an evaluation of service lines for operation in extended outages.
• Update your facility disaster plan to address needs for additional service lines.
• Discuss the impacts of an extended power outage on your facility.
