Gerard Colman, FHFMA, FACHE, CPHIMS, MHA, PhD, Senior Vice President and Chief of Clinical Operations at MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

Gerard Colman, FHFMA, FACHE, CPHIMS has more than 24 years of health care management and finance experience. As the Senior Vice President and Chief of Clinical Operations at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, Mr. Colman is responsible for all hospital and clinic patient and non-patient care operations, academic divisions, and several off campus care center facilities. He is responsible for the strategic revenue and annual budget process for a 3 billion dollar plus operating margin and the coordination of research funding as it is related to hospital operations. Mr. Colman is also responsible for operating efficiency increases in patient volume and correlating hospital revenue. Mr. Colman works closely with the many faculty and administrative leaders to constantly improve the effectiveness of our research-driven patient care through strategic business planning and growth, implementation of new operating systems, oversight of campus expansion and redevelopment and improved collaborations and communications. Prior to joining MD Anderson in 2004, Mr. Colman was employed by Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Irvington Hospital, and the Childrens Hospital of New Jersey. He served as Administrative Director of Patient Care Operations & Financial Services. Mr. Colman began his career in healthcare in the United States Navy. He is currently in the dissertation phase of his PhD from the University of Texas School of Public Health. Mr. Colman has his Masters in Healthcare Administration from the School of Social Research in New York and his Bachelors in Healthcare Administration from Southern Illinois University.

Description

This session will discuss the impacts of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act on overall clinical operations while exploring future trends emerging due to the legislation. Impacts on hospital strategic planning and construction will be discussed as they relate to the health care reform legislation. Supporting data on trends discussed will be presented throughout the session along with actual examples. This session will enable attendees to:

Identify key points of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that impact hospital strategic planning.
Recognize future trends in operational planning that impact construction and design.
Explore how patient satisfaction scores impact executive decision making.
Identify design options that will support overall patient satisfaction while balancing the budget.
