Quite a journey: From stem cells to megakaryocytes to platelets
Description
In this lecture, participants will learn the basics regarding hematopoietic differentiation down the megakaryocytic lineage, and the subsequent stages of: megakaryocyte commitment, endomitosis to obtain polyploidy, cytoplasmic maturation and platelet formation. The speaker will highlight recent discoveries that reveal a role for MKL1 and G proteins in the regulation of megakaryocytopoiesis and thrombopoiesis.
Award Description: This award honors Tibor Greenwalt, MD, who was the first registrant at the first AABB Annual Meeting and founding editor of TRANSFUSION. The award recognizes an individual who made major scientific or clinical contributions to hematology, transfusion medicine or cellular therapies and succinctly communicated these advances.

Explain how the gene product MKL1 plays a role in both normal megakaryocytopoiesis and megakaryocytic leukemia.
