Instrumentation for the Collection of Peripheral Blood Hematopoietic Progenitor Cells: A Comparison
Rebecca Haley, MD, MT(ASCP)SBB, Medical director, Cord Blood Services, NMDP Donor and Apheresis Centers, Puget Sound Blood Center
Description
Devices and methodologies have been developed and adapted over the years to procure, isolate, process and manipulate cell based products for use in stem cell transplantation, immunotherapy, gene therapy and regenerative medicine. Instruments and technical protocols have evolved to improve efficacy and safety with conventional applications and provide novel approaches for investigational protocols. This session will review the relative strengths and weaknesses of available apheresis instruments used for blood mononuclear cell collection and marrow processing. The application of additional devices and methodologies for post-collection, offline manipulations of cell based products will also be discussed with special emphasis on quality control and regulatory implications.
-
Compare and contrast the apheresis instruments that are available and approved for peripheral blood mononuclear cell collection and their potential application for processing of cell based products.
-
Describe and discuss the methodologies and devices for ex-vivo processing or manipulation of cell based products for in-vivo applications.
-
Review the quality requirements, standards and applicable state and federal regulations relevant to the collection, processing and manipulation of blood and marrow cellular products.
