The Importance of Monitoring Iron Stores in Blood Donors
Description
AABB Association Bulletin #12-03 recommends that blood collecting organizations provide donors with information on the risks of post-donation iron deficiency and should take action(s) to monitor, limit or prevent iron deficiency in blood donors. This session will review the various options instituted by the blood centers in the United States in response to this bulletin. This session will also review the role of point-of-care testing such as zinc protoporphyrin to assess the donors body iron stores. In addition, the speakers will review the data from one blood donor center that increased the inter-donation interval.
