Description
Red cell antibodies found in patient samples are sometimes not what they appear to be on initial presentation. The reactivity of commercial antigen typing reagents can at times be misleading. Apparent alloantibodies sometimes turn out to be autoanbodies and vice versa. This session will present real-world examples of antibodies with apparent specificity found on further investigation, or on a subsequent patient admission, to not be what they were thought to be. Examples will include perplexing reactivity with Rh reagents and baffling Kell and Kidd system specificities.
-
Advise and provide guidance for transfusion recommendations in the face of irregular results.
-
Assess aberrant or anomalous red cell reactivity with Rh reagents.
-
Present clues and characteristics of antibodies to high-prevalence antigens.
