Metabolic Issues During Massive Transfusions of Infants,,
Description
Specific issues need to be considered when transfusing neonates. Some of these issues have been evolving recently with some important new information in this field. This session will discuss metabolic considerations in transfusing neonates, such as alterations in potassium and chemicals included in blood preservative and additive solutions. In addition, two special practices will be discussed. One is the emerging use of fresh whole blood for craniofacial surgery. The other topic concerns the results of a study analyzing the age of red blood cell transfusions on clinical outcomes of premature infants.
