Track: Teaching, Learning and Student Success
Program Code: 5039
LEAD PRESENTER / PANEL ORGANIZER / BOF LEADER :

Description
We all know that our students are digital natives. They use mobile devices as if they were appendages to their body. They communicate in 140 characters or less. They are not bound by time limitations – they don't even wear watches. They are connected and in constant contact. Yet, most of the students do not bridge the technology that they use in their non-schooling time to learning. One of the new roles of educators is to help the student to bridge the gap between common use of technology and using the technology to assist them in learning and collaborating. This presentation will focus on the role of creating a community of learners in an ever increasing mobile, fast and virtual world. Etienne Wenger identified three crucial characteristics of a learning community: domain, community and practice. We will explore each of their characteristics and how the structured use of technology can transform our students from being part of a community of circumstance to a community of learners.
