Banner security works well for allowing users access to Banner forms and processes. However, maintaining security for a large number of users across several database instances can become a challenging task. Pacific Lutheran University has been a Banner client since 1996 and over the years has built a number of tools to extend and enhance the maintenance and use of Banner Security. Without modifying baseline, we've developed tools to do the following:
* Grant/revoke Oracle roles based on security classes so users can access data from third-party reporting tools such as MS Access
* Grant/revoke web roles for Banner Self-Service based on security objects
* Limit rows returned by views based on security objects
* Associate security classes with positions so a new hire is automatically placed in approved security classes
* Use features added in the 8.x version of the Security Maintenance form to set account expiration dates, track additional information for an account, assign login calendars (to restrict days/times Banner can be used), and make use of security groups (super classes)
This session will be a demonstration and discussion about PLU's methods and the benefits they provide. It is intended for anyone who maintains Banner security.
