Description
This session will describe the differences between being a leader and being a manager. The biggest difference between managers and leaders is the way they motivate the people who work or follow them, and this sets the tone for most other aspects of what they do. Many people lead and manage at the same time, and some may display a combination of behaviors. Those who lead and manage at the same time have management jobs, but they realize that you cannot “buy hearts”, especially when times call for following their leader down a difficult path, and so act as leaders too. Managers ensure that their company’s policies, procedures, and values are understood and achieved by all people under their direct supervision. Managers spend very little time developing their people or finding safer and more efficient ways of completing tasks. Leaders have the same qualities as a manager, but they also have an additional set of skills that a manager has yet to develop: vision, development, respect, trust, and purpose. Almost anyone can be a manager, but it takes person of integrity and motivation to be a leader.
