Description
1. The session traces the rise of good guidance through the writings of important educator/psychologists including Montessori, Dewey, Piaget, Vygotsky, Erikson, and Maslow. 2. The session makes the case that good guidance not only helps manage daily classroom conflicts, but teaches children life skills they need in modern democratic society. 3. The session uses video clips and anecdotes, with group discussion, to illustrate and discuss each of five democratic life skills. The skills, learned sequentially, are the ability to: a. See oneself as a worthy, growing individual and member of the group. b. Express strong emotions in non-hurting ways. c. Accept the unique human qualities in other members of the group. d. Solve problems by working cooperatively with others. e. Think intelligently and ethically. 4. The session uses presentation with small group discussion and sharing to illustrate teaching techniques and progress-indicators relative to the five democratic life skills. 5. On a volunteer basis, participants share gains from the session relative to the stated outcomes.
