Description
The Tribal and Indigenous Early Childhood Network will share their best practices for addressing issues relative to providing culturally responsive curriculum for and about indigenous people. Presenters will discuss some of the most critical current issues, including the preparation of teachers for culturally responsive teaching, selecting and incorporating appropriate curriculum, sensitive awareness of cultural practices, language maintenance and language loss, and identifying quality resources, such as literature and websites. Presenters will address concerns regarding inappropriate curriculum and practices that misinform and/or perpetuate negative stereotypes about indigenous people. Presenters will specifically address the continued use of inappropriate and/or stereotypical curriculum and practices related to American Indians. Participants will be provided with examples of inappropriate curriculum, as well as, examples of authentic and culturally respectful curriculum. In addition, participants will receive information and resources that will assist them in acquiring or developing responsive curriculum.
