With more than 260,000 U.S. students studying abroad annually, a tenfold increase over the last decade, it’s clear that U.S. universities have embraced the importance of ensuring today’s students build cross-cultural skills for success in the global workplace. This is the crossroads where international education and career services programs intersect. Collaboration between career services and international education can yield powerful results for students, employers and staff. In this presentation we will describe how MIT merged two departments to form the office of Global Education and Career Development and leveraged one another’s strengths to promote gains in both areas. Participants will learn about strategies for how career services, working in tandem with international education offices, can incorporate a global perspective into their services, with the goal of enabling students to begin to shape their international futures.
