Description
Asperger’s Syndrome is an Autism Spectrum Disorder and colleges are seeing growing numbers of students with this disorder. This population presents unique challenges to career services professionals and employers alike. These students are challenged by decreased social and interpersonal skills, peculiar or impaired language and comprehension skills, and lack of self-advocacy skills. Yet, these are the very skills which are essential for success when preparing for employment opportunities. How can career services offices effectively prepare students with this high functioning form of Autism for interviews, internships, job search, and life after college? This session will explore Asperger’s Syndrome, review characteristics of students with this disorder, and examine how students are affected in relation to career choice and planning. Resources, suggestions and strategies for career services professionals working with this population will also be provided during this session.
