What is the role of university career services in times of an increasing shortage of highly qualified staff in companies? Are career services student- and graduate-oriented or brokers of employers' needs? In German—and many European universities—students are seen as self-responsible adults. That attitude is reflected in the approaches used in career services. Most student counselors in Germany use nondirective, client- and resource-oriented techniques, mainly offering self-help assistance. At the same time, employers expect career services to do placement, helping to fill the employers' vacancies. Is there a significant difference in approaches of career services on each side of the Atlantic Ocean? What pros and cons do different approaches have? What roles do employers' expectations and funding play? What can we learn from each other?
