Gavitt Woodard grew up in Menlo Park, California. As a high school student she won first place in the California State Science Fair and was a finalist in the Siemens Westinghouse Science Competition. She attended Harvard College where she majored in Neurobiology and minored in Health Care Policy. At Harvard she was a recipient of a Merck Undergraduate Research Fellowship and conducted two years of research on Alzheimer’s disease. She is currently a third year student at Stanford Medical School and has worked with Dr. John Morton for two years on obesity and bariatric surgery research. She has presented many different studies at national and international meetings including ACS, DDW, SAGES, ASMBS, and IFSO. With Dr. Morton, she created a new medical school course “Obesity in America” which was recognized by the California Medical Association with a Physicians for Healthy Communities grant. She is the teaching assistant for two medical school courses: “Obesity in America” and “Advanced Suturing.” She is the President of the Surgical Interest Group and plans to go into surgery.
