Learning Objectives:
  1. Explain the epidemiological evidence linking sedentary behavior and future health outcomes.
  2. State the independent influence of sedentary behaviors on health, beyond the health risks associated with physical inactivity, obesity, smoking and other common risk factors.
  3. Discuss how sedentary behavior was addressed in development of the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.
  4. Describe the epidemiological evidence linking sedentary behaviors to the development of chronic diseases and premature mortality.
  5. Discuss the public health burden associated with sedentary behavior, and the degree to which it is independent of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.
