Learning Objectives:- Explain the epidemiological evidence linking sedentary behavior and future health outcomes.
- State the independent influence of sedentary behaviors on health, beyond the health risks associated with physical inactivity, obesity, smoking and other common risk factors.
- Discuss how sedentary behavior was addressed in development of the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.
- Describe the epidemiological evidence linking sedentary behaviors to the development of chronic diseases and premature mortality.
- Discuss the public health burden associated with sedentary behavior, and the degree to which it is independent of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.
