Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the determinants of brown adipose tissue prevalence and activity in adult humans
- Explain the potential role of brown adipose tissue thermogenesis in energy expenditure and obesity in humans
- State the neural pathways through which the brain normally alters the level of BAT energy expenditure, primarily for thermoregulatory goals
- Delineate CNS sites and identify neurotransmitters systems through which the level of BAT energy expenditure is controlled and could be modified pharmacologically
