Learning Objectives:
  1. Discuss the published literature on the relationship between breastfeeding and obesity.
  2. Discuss the potential mechanisms and threats to the validity of this relationship.
  3. Describe the potential modifiable determinants of gestational weight gain emphasizing the degree to which race, cultural background and body image influences weight gain.
  4. Identify the gaps in our understanding of what influences weight gain in order to design interventions to promote adequate weight gain during pregnancy.
