Description
Since the middle of the 19th century, fans have been early adapters and adopters of new technologies, experimenting with everything from toy printing press to mp3 files in their efforts to connect with each other and to share their excitement about their favorite works. In doing so, they have helped to lay the foundations for social networking, participatory culture, and collective intelligence and experiment with the cutting edge of global media flows. As Project New Media Literacies is seeking to introduce young people (and their educators) to the principles and practices of participatory culture, we have sought to learn what we can from fandom, including new pedagogical models and emerging approaches to activism and citizenship. In this talk, Dr. Jenkins will walk through a quick history of participatory culture, spell out what Project NML has learned from fandom, and suggest new ways that fans can get involved in transforming the American education system.
