Jaakko Tuomilehto, MD, MA, PhD is Professor of Public Health at the University of Helsinki, Finland, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at the South Ostrobothnia Central Hospital, Seinäjoki, Finland, Visiting Professor of Epidemiology, Danube-University Krems, Austria and in La Paz Hospital, Madrid, Spain. He initiated the Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study, the landmark study for the primary prevention of type 2 diabetes which is the first proper controlled trial to show that type 2 diabetes is preventable with lifestyle intervention. He has been leading several other major international studies on cardiovascular disease and diabetes, for instance the large collaborative DECODE and DECODA.studies (Diabetes Epidemiology: Collaborative analysis Of Diagnostic criteria in Europe/Asia) on the prevalence and outcomes of hyperglycaemia, and the WHO DIAMOND project to map the incidence of type 1 diabetes worldwide. He has carried out several major studies on the epidemiology and genetics of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. He has served in as a member of several national and international scientific committees. He was the chair of the planning task force for the first ever national type 2 diabetes prevention programme in Finland. He has been active in a number of scientific societies including European Society of Cardiology, Working Group on Epidemiology and Prevention (past President), European Federation of Neurological Societies, Science Panel on Neuroepidemiology (past Chair), International Diabetes Epidemiology Group (past President). He has published over 1110 peer-reviewed original scientific articles and has served on the advisory board of many scientific journals, and currently is the Editor-in-Chief of Primary Care Diabetes. He ranks among the 15 most cited researchers (during the last 10 years) in clinical medicine worldwide with h-index 110. He has been presented with a number of prestigious awards including: Hans Chiari Prize from Austria, Prof. M. Viswanathan DRC Silver Jubilee Oration Award from India, UNESCO – Hellmut Mehnert Award on aetiology and prevention of diabetes, Castelli Pedroli Prize from the EASD, the Kelly West Award for Outstanding Achievement in Epidemiology from the ADA, the Peter Bennett Diabetes Epidemiology Award from the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group, Frederick H. Epstein Memorial Lecture Award from AHA, International Khwarizmi Award from Iran and the Grand Hamdan International Award for Diabetes Research from Dubai.
