Tamas L Horvath, DVM, PhD. My laboratory has been studying the relationship between peripheral hormones and circuits of the central nervous system that, in turn, regulate peripheral tissue function and behavior. We have established an important relationship between whole body energetics and mitochondrial function and synaptic plasticity of neurons in various parts of the brain to support normal function and neuroprotection. We will provide our animal models, expertise in cellular bioenergetics and signaling, electron microscopy and whole body energy matebolism to test the hypothesis that environmental enrichment and calorie restriction engage a common intracellular mechanism to promote maintenance of neuronal stem cells and their ability to enter cell cycle in the dendate gyrus of adult mice during the aging process.
