Dr. Rexford Ahima is an Associate Professor of Medicine and director of the Obesity Unit of the University of Pennsylvania Institute for Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism. He received a BSc degree at the University of London, MD at the University of Ghana, and PhD at Tulane University in New Orleans. After completing his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, Dr. Ahima did clinical and research fellowships in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Ahima has served as a member of the Endocrine Society Annual Meeting Steering Committee, and the National Institutes of Health Strategic Taskforce on Obesity and Diabetes, and reviewer for the National Institutes of Health, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Wellcome Trust. Dr. Ahima was elected as a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation in 2005, and Association of American Physicians in 2010. He is currently a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, associate editor of the Journal of Clinical Investigation and Gastroenterology, and co-editor of the Annals of the New York Academy Year in Diabetes and Obesity. Dr. Ahima’s research focuses on the central and peripheral metabolic actions of adipokines, particularly leptin, adiponectin and resistin. He is the director of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center Mouse Phenotyping Core, and attending endocrinologist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
