John D. Brunzell, M.D received his medical degree from the University of Washington, where he also did most of his postgraduate training, interrupted by house staff training in Los Angeles, two research sabbaticals and Army service. He has served on the research committees of the NIH, the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association for Patient-Oriented Research and the American Association of Physicians. He received the 1991 Excellence in Clinical Research Award from the NIH General Clinical Research Centers. He has over 300 publications. He was the Director of the Endocrine Fellowship Training Program from 1984 to 2007, the Director of the General Clinical Research Center from 1996 to 2004, and the acting Division head from 1993 to 1996. He has trained 24 postdoctoral fellows in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition, 20 of whom progressed into academic medicine, and has been the mentor for 7 individuals with NIH K23 or K08 awards. Currently, he is investigating dyslipidemia associated with central obesity as a predictor of cardiovascular risk, including patients with the metabolic syndrome, those with type 1 and 2 diabetes and those with familial forms of hypertriglyceridemia. Dr. Brunzell is currently Professor Emeritus, active, of Medicine, the Director of the Lipid Clinic at the University of Washington Medical Center and of the Lipid Research Clinic at Harborview Medical Center, and is the Medical Director of the Northwest Lipid Metabolism and Diabetes Reseach Laboratories, all at the University of Washington in Seattle.
