Dr. Anita P. Courcoulas is the Chief of the Division of Minimally Invasive Bariatric and General Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She directs a broad program of highly trained specialists in the most advanced techniques in abdominal surgery including minimal access general surgery, abdominal surgery during pregnancy, and high-volume bariatric surgery.
Dr. Courcoulas is a Professor of Surgery and holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health and Epidemiology and specializes in surgical outcomes research. Dr. Courcoulas is also the Director of the Minimally Invasive Bariatric and General Surgery Fellowship Program which trains 3 post graduate fellows annually and has trained many of the leaders in the field of advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery. She is the Principal Investigator of a National Institute of Health NIDDK-funded consortium, Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery-LABS, to study the effects and outcomes following bariatric surgery. She is a national leader in the field of technology assessment and outcomes assessment following various surgical procedures. Dr. Courcoulas directs a full-time research group that focuses on clinical trials of emerging technology in bariatric surgery and various areas of outcomes research following bariatric surgery including a Stimulus-funded trial to compare surgical and non-surgical treatments of diabetes and obesity.
Dr. Courcoulas is an active member and leader within many national surgical organizations and has published widely on outcomes assessments in bariatric, trauma and pediatric surgery. She serves on the editorial boards of a number of scientific journals and she has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers and abstracts as well as book chapters on focused areas of interest in bariatric surgery.
