Hossein Gharib, MD, MACP, MACE, is the immediate Past President of the American College of Endocrinology, Past President of AACE, and Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine where he has served as a consultant in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism since 1979. An international authority on thyroid disorders, he has lectured at over 300 national and international endocrine meetings. He has authored or coauthored more than 250 academic papers, including peer-reviewed journal articles, scientific meeting abstracts, book chapters, and clinical practice guidelines. Dr. Gharib has served on the editorial boards of JCEM, Thyroid, Endocrine Practice, Acta Endocrinologica (Romania), and International Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism. He coauthored the first Evidence-Based Endocrinology textbook which was reprinted in 2008. His honors include being recognized as a Master of both the American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinology. He was the recipient of the Paul Starr Award of the American Thyroid Association, the Laureate Award of the Department of Medicine-Mayo Clinic, the International Clinician Award of AME, and the SBEM Award (Brazilian Society of Endocrinology) for contributions to endocrinology. He will receive the prestigious Distinguished Physician Award of the Endocrine Society in June 2010.
