Stephen Ponder MD, FAAP, CDE is a pediatric endocrinologist in Texas. He holds an appointment of Professor of Pediatrics and maintains a busy clinical schedule. He attended the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He has practiced in central and south Texas and soon will be relocating to take on a new academic and clinical position in west Texas with Texas Tech University. He has been active in the fields of type 1 and 2 diabetes in children, general pediatric endocrinology, and over the past 8 years has been developing new systems of diabetes care delivery using wireless technologies. He oversees the largest residential diabetes camping program in Texas, the Texas Lions Camp. He has served on numerous local, state and national boards and is a local activist in the area of diabetes and obesity prevention. He founded the Coastal Bend Diabetes Initiative, a non-profit foundation that provides grants to other non-profit groups in his home area who are combating the epidemic of child and adult obesity and diabetes. He has been awarded over 1 million dollars in local and federal grants to develop new and innovative wireless technologies to improve health care delivery in persons with diabetes. He founded the Diabetes Housecall program in 2006, a full service, home-based diabetes care follow up program which is now reimbursed by state and private insurers in Texas.
