Dr. Kwiterovich received his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine after completing a predoctoral fellowship in the Division of Human Genetics at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He served his internship in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, and completed his training at the Molecular Disease Branch of the National Heart and Lung Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, and in the Department of Pediatrics, Harriet Lane Service, at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Kwiterovich is a Fellow of the American Heart Association Council on Arteriosclerosis and a member of both the Society for Pediatric Research and the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association.

Editorial Experience
He has served as a member of the Editorial Board for the Lipid Research Clinics dyslipidemia monograph and for the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism and was co-editor of a special supplement on prevention of coronary heart disease in the European Heart Journal. More recently, he was the editor for a supplement in the American Journal of Cardiology entitled: “Modern Concepts of Lipoprotein Modulated Disease” and is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of Clinical Lipidology.
Awards
Among his many awards and honors, Dr. Kwiterovich received the Howard W. Blakeslee Award of the American Heart Association for his book titled Beyond Cholesterol: The Johns Hopkins Complete Guide for Avoiding Heart Disease. He has been listed twice in The Best Doctors in the U.S., in several editions of Who’s Who in America and in the World, and in American Men and Women of Science. He was awarded the Sanctae Crucis Award 2005 for outstanding professional accomplishments from the College of the Holy Cross. He was recognized for his research, teaching and clinical care in 2008 by The Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Preventive Cardiology Center at Heartfest.
Current Position/Responsibilities
In addition to being Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr. Kwiterovich is Chief of the Lipid Research/Atherosclerosis Unit at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Director of The Johns Hopkins University Lipid Clinic, and Director of The Johns Hopkins Physicians Lipid Disorders Training Center. He was the Director and principal investigator for The Johns Hopkins Coronary Artery Disease Study and the principal investigator for the National Health and Nutrition Education Survey (NHANES). He is currently a principal investigator for the Triad Heart Study, the Adolescent Diet, Hormones and Breast Cancer Susceptibility Study and the AIM-HIGH Study. Dr. Kwiterovich was also the Scientific Co-Founder and President of Lipid Therapeutics, Inc.
Dr. Kwiterovich’s current research interests include the molecular basis of disorders of lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, especially sitosterolemia and hyperapoB, gene mapping to predict premature coronary artery disease, the effects of lipid-lowering agents and diet on dyslipidemia, and the expression and treatment of dyslipidemias starting in childhood.
