Dr. Simons-Morton was trained in family practice, public health, preventive medicine, and epidemiology. She is board certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Simons-Morton served on faculties of the University of Texas Health Science Center in Galveston and the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, before joining the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in 1992 as Research Medical Officer in the Prevention and Demonstration Research Branch, Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Applications. At NHLBI, she led the Prevention Scientific Research Group, the Clinical Applications and Prevention Program, and the Clinical Applications and Prevention Branch, and became Senior Scientific Advisor in the Division of Prevention and Population Sciences in 2007. Dr. Simons-Morton has been Project Officer and scientific collaborator on numerous multi-center clinical trials testing approaches to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Topics addressed include effects of dietary patterns and multi-component interventions on blood pressure, effects of community intervention on health-care seeking behavior for acute cardiac events, approaches to reduce obesity and to improve physical activity levels, and effects of various clinical treatment strategies on cardiovascular events in type 2 diabetes. Dr. Simons-Morton is author or co-author of more than 90 journal or book publications on cardiovascular disease prevention topics.
