Dr. Rexford Ahima is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He received a BSc degree from the University of London, MD from the University of Ghana and PhD in Neuroscience from Tulane University in New Orleans. Dr. Ahima completed his residency training in internal medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, followed by clinical and research fellowships in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Ahima is an elected a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, Fellow of the Obesity Society, and the Director of the Obesity Unit of the University of Pennsylvania Institute for Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism. He is an associate editor of Gastroenterology, and a member of the editorial boards of Endocrinology, Journal of Clinical Investigation and Obesity Online. Dr. Ahima is a member of the National Institutes of Health Integrative Physiology of Obesity and Diabetes Study Section, Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and the National Institutes of Health Strategic Taskforce on Obesity and Diabetes. He is the Director of the Weight Management and Metabolism Clinic, and an attending physician on the Endocrinology Service at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Ahima has authored more than 100 papers on energy homeostasis and obesity, particularly how adipokines act on neuronal circuits in the hypothalamus and other brain areas to regulate feeding, hormones, glucose and lipids.
