Dr. Cusi is a Professor of Medicine in the Diabetes Division at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he has worked for the past 12 years. He is the Director of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinic at the Veterans Administration Medical Center at San Antonio, Texas.He received his medical degree and completed his residency in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He moved to Houston, Texas, where he completed a fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Cusi has received grants from the Buuroughs Wellcome Fund, the American Diabetes Association, Howard Hughes Institute and Veterans Administration. His work has examined the role of insulin resistance and beta-cell failure in the pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and currently is aimed at understanding the mechanisms leading to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its relationship to T2DM, as well as searching for new screening and treatment strategies.
He has served in the Metabolism Section of the American Diabetes Association annual meeting scientific committee and is the President of the San Antonio, Texas Chapter. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE). He has been a board member for the AACE Minority Health Affairs Committee (2002-2008) and is the current President of the Texas Chapter. he is also a board member of the National Lipid Association (Southwest Chapter).
He has published in many peer-reviewed journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, Proceeding of the National Academy of Science, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Hepatology, Journal of Hepatoogy, Gastroenterology, Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Diabetes Reviews, The Endocrinologist, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, and the American Journal of Physiology (among others), and is a reviewer for several journals in the fields of endocrinology and diabetes.
