Dr Alastair R. McLellan NHS Consultant Endocrinologist at the Western Infirmary and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, UK. Having trained previously as Clinical Scientist with the MRC Blood Pressure Unit, he is currently Lead Clinician for the North Glasgow Osteoporosis and Bone Services and currently Chairs the Osteoporosis Management Group of Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Board that is responsible for osteoporosis service delivery for a population of ~1.4million. Dr McLellan is Chairman of the Secondary Care Forum and of the Medical Board of the National Osteoporosis Society in the UK. He also is chairman of the American Society of Bone & Mineral Research Working Group on systems-based approaches to fracture secondary prevention; this group is committed to promoting expertise on how to establish clinical services that address effective delivery of strategies for fracture secondary prevention in different healthcare systems around the world.
Dr McLellan's main interest is in the development of innovative clinical services that broaden the access of 'at risk patients' to DXA and to expert clinical opinion; an example of this is the Fracture Liaison Service established in 1999 in the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, UK.
