John Funder graduated MD, PhD from the University of Melbourne and has spent over 40 years in fulltime research, largely in the Cinderella areas of aldosterone and mineralocorticoid receptors. He has been President of the Endocrine Society of Australia and the Australian Society for Medical Research, Chairman of the Executive Committee and Honorary President of the International Society for Endocrinology, and was the first non-North American to be elected to the Council of the Endocrine Society. In 2002 he received the Sidney Ingbar Award of the Society, and in 2007-2008 chaired the Society's taskforce on Clinical Guidelines for Primary Aldosteronism. He is currently an Honorary Professor at Monash, Melbourne and Queensland Universities, a Senior Fellow at Prince Henry's Institute and Director of Research Strategy at Monash Medical Centre. His time is currently divided between collaborative research, consulting for the academic, philanthropic and pharmaceu tical sectors, and missionary activity in the area of Cardiovascular Endocrinology. On what his wife Valerie Diamond terms his frequent visits to Australia they live in bucolic tranquillity on a small vineyard in the Yarra Valley, 30 miles east of Melbourne.
