Description
Suicide claimed 32,500 American lives in 2005, with two-thirds of those deaths (a 20% increase) among people of working age, primarily men ages 26 to 59. Military veterans are at increased risk of suicide, and a look at police departments shows that officers are two- to three-times more likely to take their life than to be killed in the line of duty. Still, there are few prevention programs in place. Two groundbreaking models for addressing suicide in the workplace are featured, both with implications for veterans -- from the Harris County Sheriff's Office and American Association of Suicidology.
Objectives:
• list suicide warning signs;
• identify employees who are distressed and possibly suicidal;
• organize factual information and best-practices to implement a suicide prevention program.
