This presentation on document management in the EA field addresses 1) current industry practices; 2) HIPAA regulations; and, 3) best practices. To understand current practices for sending, receiving, retrieval, and storage of documents (e.g. Care Authorization, Assessment, Billing, etc.), we conducted a survey of internal EAPs, external EAPs, case management software vendors and private practitioners. Compliance with HIPAA is a major focus of our survey, as is capacity and willingness to transmit documents electronically. The presenters will review HIPAA regulations related to transmission of documents and conclude by offering suggestions for best practices in document management.
