Description
Learning Objectives: The session is designed for practising general surgeons and surgical residents. At the end of the session, participants will be able to describe the rationale for the emergence of acute general surgical services in Canada and discuss future directions in Canadian acute general surgery; summarize best evidence on source control and goal directed resuscitation in the management of general surgical emergencies; describe the role of abdominal compartment syndrome in abdominal sepsis and outline steps to limit its impact; summarize recent literature on the management of bowel obstruction; identify important pitfalls in and helpful strategies for severe pancreatitis; classify necrotizing soft tissue infections and outline principles of early therapy; commiserate with other general surgeons about working non-stop around the clock.
