Description
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is an established technology and medical procedure offered by a majority of IVF clinics in the United States and it is a frequently requested topic for clinicians involved in ART. As the use of PGD expands, the need to educate clinicians about evidence-based data and data from experienced IVF-PGD centers about PGD practice and outcomes increases. Reproductive medicine specialists need to convey information regarding the use of PGD for patients with hereditary diseases to general obstetrician/gynecologists, as well as other primary care providers. All health care professionals dealing with patients considering PGD should be aware of safety and patient counseling issues.

This course is aimed at all health care professionals who deal with patients that may consider PGD, including reproductive specialists, primary care providers, obstetrician/ gynecologists, nurses, genetic counselors, and embryologists. The goals of this course are to review the expanding indications for PGD, the rationale of PGD for ART patients in improving ART outcome, and to describe the appropriate techniques for safer PGD. Participants will learn how to properly counsel patients before IVF with PGD and how to assess patients in clinical practice in order to determine which patients may benefit from ART with PGD.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:
1. Describe the indications for PGD.
2. Identify the specific uses of PGD to prevent genetic diseases.
3. Apply appropriate methods and practices for PGD according to available guidelines.
4. Summarize published evidence regarding the application of PGD to the improvement of ART and pregnancy outcome.
