Anesthesia for Open Heart Surgery
Description
Learning Objectives:
List four medications that a patient may be taking prior to surgery that should be held before or on the day of surgery. Describe advantages/disadvantages of types of cardioplegia, vasopressors, blood-sparing agents, anesthetic technique, and postoperative sedation for an adult patient undergoing open-heart surgery. Recommend at least two strategies to improve medication safety in the operating room. Identify two non-intravenous uses of antibiotics in the operating room. Review at least five medication-related questions that a pharmacist may be asked that are unique to a patient about to undergo or undergoing anesthesia and surgery.
