Learning Objectives:
  • Identify recent controversies regarding the therapeutic and prognostic value of the metabolic syndrome.
  • Summarize guidelines recently issued by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) regarding the metabolic syndrome.
  • Explain the rationale for using thiazolidinediones (TZDs) in diabetic patients with cardiovascular disease.
  • Apply principles of motivational interview to identify key factors in assessing a patient?s motivation to adhere to medication regimens.
  • Recall techniques to incorporate motivational interview into practice.
